General
Dress Code Information
We have a dress code for children
because we want them to present a neat and elegant appearance. We want
them to identify with their class. We also want to avoid a "fashion
show." Please bring your child suitably prepared for class.
To ensure properly fitted
shoes and uniformity, we have arranged for 1887
Dance Shoppe to fit all our students; please
purchase your uniform there. The shop owner is there to help with your
child's fitting on weekends. Please call ahead of time to confirm size
availability (415) 441-1887.
- Bath size towels should
be brought for floor exercises for lower division.
- Place your child's name
inside of or on all items of their school uniform.
- Jewelry and watches may
not be worn during class.
- If you lose an item of
clothing, look in our lost and found in the dressing room.
Character,
Jazz and Tap Classes
Girls in all ballet classes and lower to middle division character, jazz
and tap must come to class wearing pink tights; or students can wear dance
socks without tights in jazz and tap. Pink tights and dance socks are
optional for Tap 2, Tap 3, Jazz 2 to Jazz 4 students. Those students in
character, jazz and tap whose shoes are or become loose fitting due to
stretching may add dance socks on top of the tights or bare feet.
Students who only take character,
jazz and tap will wear the periwinkle leotard or leotard of their last
achieved ballet level. Lower division ballet students who take ballet
and supplementary classes will require two leotards, as the ballet loetard
has a skirt and so a leotard without the skirt will be worn under the
jazz shorts for jazz and tap classes.
Hair
Girls in all ballet classes and lower to middle division complementary
disciplines must wear their hair in a neat and tidy classical bun or pinned
up so hair does not obscure the neckline or get in the students' eyes.
Tap
2 & 3, Jazz 2 to 4 students must wear a neat bun or tidy ponytail.
It's easy to make the perfect ballet bun.
See our tutorial
below.
Students will be given a merit class ribbon in their class color, which
must be worn to every class. Those who were previously ballet students
with the Shan-Yee Poon Ballet School but currently only take jazz, tap,
or character, will retain the merit class riboon for their last achieved
ballet level. Tap 2, 3, Jazz 2 to Jazz 4students' merit class ribbons
are optional. If lost or forgotten, a replacement ribbon may be purchased
at the front desk for $1. Please place hair accessories in a small cosmetics
bag so they can be easily accessed.
Dress
Code for Adults
There is
no dress code for adults; however, proper shoes must be worn for the type
of dance: ballet slippers, tap or jazz shoes.
Black soled
shoes are not allowed in the studios unless they are specifically stated
by manufacturer as made of non-marking materials, as they will leave scuff
marks that are very difficult to remove.

How
to Make a Ballet Bun
The
ballet bun keeps hair from flying in a dancer's face; it also creates
a clean, elegant line for the dancer. Follow these steps to make the perfect
bun. For additional help, select a photograph with a border to watch a
video illustrating the step. Note: You need the Quicktime plug-in with
the Intel 5 codec to view videos.
Materials
List
Spray bottle filled
with water
Hairspray
Hair gel
Hair pins (Thicker type with plastic tips.)
Bobby pins
Elastic band
Comb & brush (Fine tooth comb preferable)
Hair net (Fine net with elastic edges. Should be same color as
hair.)
1 To
start the process, lightly spray your hands and the hair with water. This
will give you better control over the hair. Gather the hair and pull it
back. Apply hair gel if you need more control over the hair.
2 Use
a hair brush to smooth out rough or uneven areas. Form a pony tail by
brushing the hair up from the jawline to the top part of the back of the
head. This will form a high bun. The placement of the pony tail determines
the placement of the bun. Mid and low buns are sometimes used with short
hair, or to accomodate a headpiece. Very short hair can be done in two
low side buns, or use hair clips to fasten the hair down without a bun.
3 Use
an elastic hair band to secure the pony tail. A tidy pony tail with hair
drawn snugly back is the key to making a good ballet bun.
4 Apply
more water or gel to keep the hair neat, and twist the pony tail.
5 Coil
the pony tail into a tight circle.
6
Use hair pins all around the coil to secure it to the rest of the hair.
Slide each pin through the outer part of the coil, then into the base
of the bun.
7
Wrap a fine hair net around the bun. Keep twisting and wrapping so that
the hair net tightly secures the bun. Make sure the hair net is the same
color as the hair.
8
Large buns may protrude too much. A flat bun is preferable. To flatten,
remove all pins; the hair net will hold the bun. Then flatten the bun
and repin all around the bun.
9
For extra hold, when the bun and hair are all secure, use hairspray. If
you need to add a headpiece, secure it tightly with bobby pins.
